Durango, Colorado

After checking into the hotel, I drove to Main Avenue in Durango to grab some dinner and check out the town whose downtown has been designated an historic district unto itself. I had a salad, a patty melt (with coleslaw) and a beer at a local joint and then wandered Main Avenue, window shopping, observing the architecture, and checking out the crowd. The town has a real old timey mountain vibe and is heavy on tourism and adventuring. It looks like a pretty cool town for the younger crowd for sure. The Strater Hotel is a landmark hotel founded in 1887 and is still standing. The Strater is a living museum, adorned with beautiful handcrafted woodwork, period wallpaper, and, according to the hotel's website, the largest collection of American Victorian walnut antiques which are used to decorate the hotel and its guestrooms.
