Chimney Rock National Historic Site

My second stop of the day was Chimney Rock National Historic Site, which is administered by the state of Nebraska and where there is an informative museum. Chimney Rock is a geological landmark that could be seen by emigrants making their way west from far out on the plains; it signaled the second phase of the Oregon Trail - the difficult passage over the Rocky Mountains. Chimney Rock was also a landmark for the California Trial, the Pony Express, and the Mormon Trail.
